Metallica - Any Chance?

Postby shawnward2 on Fri Feb 13, 2009 11:30 am

I was reading in the Moncton paper (online) that Metallica was turned away for a concert this coming concert season because the Coliseum ceiling is too low....so..what I am wondering is, does this mean we might still be seeing them play Halifax? St.John?

Interesting anyway that they were looking at dates here..and I see they are playing Europe much of the summer..so a date wouldn't be announced til later. Here's to hoping.

Thats Major news turning down a Metallica show. Now the question is, where does this Halifax? If they talked with Moncton, they would of had to talk with Halifax...

Also - With the fact they it was said they were speaking with Moncton would it be possible for an outdoor venue? Sure we cant hold you in the Col. but we sure can at the Hill....

I'm still in shock over the fact that we could've had Metallica! I've got that just got punched in the stomach feeling.

Man, that so sucks and you gotta know that the City (Shane and Ian) are reporting any loss revenue from the Coliseum to the Mayor and to Grahamn Gov.

Last I heard they should be ready with a few options and cost to building the new downtown Metro Centre by April.

The obvious choice is the Highfield Square. Move the BAY to teh Mall and tell Mr. Irving he can move the WildCats to the new 20,000 seat Moncton Metro Centre.

Because the Halifax Mooseheads DON'T play at the Sportsplex!!!

Coliseum can be used for smaller concerts with less Production needs, trade shows, etc.

Hell, the only way we're going to be competitive to go after the WJHC or the WORLD WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS is to have more then one option.

Build it and they will come!!

It's great that the sense of urgency for talks of a new downtown arena is reaching a fever pitch. The previous mayor seemed to realize that we needed a new arena (albeit because of Ian Fowler I'm sure) but kind of put things on the back burner. It sucks that we would still be 4-5 years away opening the doors for a new arena even if the go-ahead was given. I think it's glaringly obvious that a new arena is needed and the feasibility study seems unnecessary and a waste of time and money but maybe they need it to provide concrete evidence to the powers that be (i.e. Feds and Province) in order to receive funding. I'd like to see Irving step up to the plate bearing gifts. Hell, for all I care they could even include the Irving name in the new facility if that's what it's going to take. I just want this to get done NOW! Let's have no band left behind.

There definitely are Metallica dates in North America again this fall. I'm in the club and I was watching some meet & greet footage. In the video, a guy asks Lars when are you back in New York and he says November. Man, I'm crossing my fingers for Halifax but I would imagine they'll hit Toronto, QC and Montreal this time around.

Saw the show in Boston...amazing!

I felt the same way when I read that Tim, that is just pathetic that we had to turn away Metallica. Unbelievable. I saw them all the times they played the coliseum in the past, excellent shows!

I had heard that Harold MacKay had a proposal in to bring Metallica to P.E.I. this summer.

Unless it's in August, I doubt it. They'll probably take a break after the Europe tour to prepare for the 2nd leg of the North American Tour.

And Tim, I agree that Moncton needs a new Coliseum, but 20 000 seats?!? I would say more like 10 000, 15 000 big max.

You may only need 10 or 15k but if you are going to build it, be with the times and go as big as you can. If you can score a 20k seat venue... all of a sudden you are THE atlantic canadian destination. World class everything will be coming. Plus it will encourage halifax to build something big too.

Correct me if I'm wrong ..but I was under the imperssion that Halifax is considering a new Metro Centre...once the ugly Cogswell interchange is torn down...the down side of all this is...a half million dollars will be spent fixing it before it is demolished..instead of just tearing it down first

As for Metallica rumors..as I said previously..I heard a rumor that they were supposed to be there(Halifax) this spring..but that is impossible due to a European tour..so maybe it was meant for the fall..who knows

Exactly! If they are going to spend the money, go with as big as they can so it will still be relevant for years to come. With the rate Moncton is growing, they need to think about years down the road when building something this important.

So 2 20k arena at less than 300km apart...yeahhh.
There is only 3 NHL arena that offer 20 000 and more.

I know it would be great for concert, but you have to think for everyday activity also. The Wildcats average 4000 people per game. And I don't think Moncton or Halifax can support a full a "20k" concert season (A lot of people are waiting for the remaining of the "Summer concert" to decide if they're buying tickets for KISS), and that's only what...4-5 shows, what's gonna happen when they're 20-30 shows/year?

I'm not here to critize or anything, just being realistic that 10k would suited Moncton the best.

I agree, somewhat , with the people that say since they are building it, that they might as well build what they can..but I do think 20,000 is a bit of a stretch. 15,000 would be underused on a week by week basis, but I think that's where it needs to be. Maybe some sort of setup where 10000 are available on a daily basis for hockey etc..with another 5000 upper level seats that can be used when needed? Dunno how that would look, or how they would pull it off, short of blanketing the sections..but is probably the best way to accomplish it. Hope Halifax or Moncton does go for it though.

Another option that would work is something similar than the "New England Dodge Music Center" in Hartford (http://www.turnerconstruction.com/conne ... 857&p=2782)

The indoor holds 7,500, and it's closed during the winter, and during the summer, they open the door, so that another 22,500 (lawn) can get access. I went there last summer for Dave Matthews and I was thinking that Moncton could use a place like that. And the artists that have performed there are pretty much any genre. Festivals go there too. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Englan ... sic_Center)

Good call on that. If they could make that work with the hockey rink, then you're all set. Sitting in Halifax, I think that idea would be amazing to pull off somewhere near the waterfront. Logistically, it is tough given Halifax's layout..but still..one can dream.
