The promoter who is bringing country star Keith Urban to Halifax is hoping Paul McCartney drops by for a concert of his own.

Harold MacKay played host to the former Beatle's senior tour staff this week.

Paul McCartney sent his senior tour staff to check out the Halifax Common, promoter Harold MacKay said Tuesday.
(Alastair Grant/Associated Press) "I feel good about it," he said Tuesday. "They did say to me that McCartney told them to come to Halifax and check it out, so that's always a good sign."

MacKay said McCartney's group, including a tour director and production manager, visited the Halifax Common, the central park where Urban is set to play this summer and where the Rolling Stones played in 2006.

"They were very impressed with everything they saw. They wanted to know a lot about the demographics. The fact that the Rolling Stones were on that site helps an awful lot," he said.

"They toured the site for a considerable length of time looking at the various angles and the ground levels and the number of screens they want. McCartney is very much a rock and roller so he likes lots of sound and lots of lights and lots of video screens."

MacKay said he expects an answer by mid-month.

The Stones headlined a concert at the Halifax Common on a rainy night in September 2006 before 50,000 fans.

MacKay announced Urban's concert in December, a month after promoters cancelled Céline Dion's show in the park, citing the unsuitability of the site.

Paul McCartney on the Commons would be a major show...Ebony and Ivory is not my cup of tea...but it would be a show.

Holy crap! That would be so mega, that's about as big as they get. Say what you will about some of the solo stuff but the guy is a legend. He can pack in thousands anywhere in the world, the fact that he would consider playing here is an honor. His last few tours he played lots of outdoor shows in Europe. I saw him in Toronto (05) and he was awesome!! Good job Mr. McKay, I have my fingers crossed and my wallet ready!

It was just on the news, promoter is saying it's 90% a go. That will eclipse any act they could've brought in. You can't get much bigger than Paul McCartney. According to the report, it'll take place in July.

That would be a big show. Hard to compare to the Stones, as much as I enjoy the Stones they have paraded themselves since Steel Wheels in 89. Not a gripe or anything I just think a McCartney show would be a little more unique.

Live and let die, they are moaning about seals on the CBC site. Don't get me started on that one.

I'm glad the news actually got leaked a bit today so I don't look like such a bad guy...er girl! So..he basically said what I was saying..it's at the late stage...logistics at this point. I would have put it at 75% last week, so to hear 90 means it's all but guaranteed. A promoter would never indicate that unless it was going to happen. That said, I didn't actually hear/see that number other than on here. But it most certainly was at an advanced stage. As I indicated, mid to late month is about as far as they can go without committing. If the 90% is accurate, then they have agreed to money and now its about plotting the tour around it. See if I can dig out a 100% for you by tomorrow.

Congrats Halifax, this is big, and as big as the Stones in the industry.

I'll take your apology in writing Mr. Gunner.

Just kidding.

Oh yeah. No Stone Temple Pilots. (I don't feel like jumping to the other thread to post that). As far as I'm aware, Halifax isn't on the map for this.

I saw that people on the web boards are starting with the seal cracks already. They have way too much time on their hands and little to say about much else. So what if he doesn't agree with the hunt, he's voiced his opinion and that's that. People get to get some perspective and stop being so shallow. Let the forums talk about the event and music, if you don't want to go..don't go!! No need to shit talk about the show when you're not planning on going. Just shut the fu*k up and save your money.

Wow, this better be right, McCartney would be my dream concert! I was just watching a live dvd of his the other day...and his Super Bowl performance a few years ago was unreal, especially "live and let die".

HALIFAX — Pop superstar Paul McCartney is apparently close to signing a deal to play a large outdoor concert in Halifax this summer.
Promoter Harold MacKay has told CTV News he’s “90 per cent sure” the former Beatle will perform on the Halifax Commons, possibly on Canada Day weekend.
MacKay says people from McCartney’s management team visited the city recently and met with Mayor Peter Kelly.
Kelly says he gave McCartney’s people a book about Halifax to give to the singer.
The mayor says the city has offered about $175,000 to cover such costs as cleanup and extra policing.
The Rolling Stones played the Commons in September 2006, attracting about 50,000 fans.

Macca, 65, told pals he was helped through his divorce from Heather Mills by family and the prospect of touring again. Dates in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK will also help recoup a £24million payout.

A friend said: "Paul's made happy by his family and music. He sees this as a kind of celebration that the messy episode with Heather is over.

"Dates for the autumn are likely to be finalised next month and fans can expect to see an amazing show."
